THE BEAUTY OF ITALY

April 2

Departure from Atlanta for Rome, the Eternal City and capital of Italy. Overnight flight.

April 3

Arrival in Rome and transfer to the hotel. Depending on your arrival time—typically in the morning—there will be an afternoon walking tour that includes visits to the Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona. Don’t forget to make a wish and toss a coin into the famous Trevi Fountain (a time-honored tradition!). While in the beautiful Piazza Navona, you may want to sample the delicious and well-known chocolate ice cream called Tartufo. Dinner and overnight in Rome.

April 4

This morning is dedicated to visiting the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, and the Church of St. Peter in Chains. Here you’ll find the famous statue of Moses, carved by Michelangelo. There will be a lot of walking as you follow in the footsteps of the Roman Empire and its emperors. Afternoon at leisure. Dinner and overnight in Rome.

April 5

Half-day tour of the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica. Visiting the Sistine Chapel and marveling at the magnificent frescoes painted by Michelangelo is an unforgettable experience. It is in this chapel that the first American Pope was recently elected. The afternoon is free to explore more of the impressive sights in the Eternal City. Dinner and overnight in Rome.

April 6

Enjoy a scenic drive through the Italian countryside. The first stop is Assisi, a hilltop village where St. Francis—the patron saint of Italy—was born. Assisi breathes serenity and beauty. A visit to the 13th-century Basilica of St. Francis will be a memorable experience. The frescoes and the life of St. Francis will be brought to life during your tour. The day ends in nearby Perugia, capital of the region of Umbria, and famous for its university. Perugia is known for the defensive walls surrounding its historic center and is one of Italy’s best-preserved medieval cities. Dinner and overnight in Perugia.

April 7

Depart from Perugia with your final destination being Florence. Before arriving, you’ll stop in Siena—another magnificent medieval city. Its Campo Square, where the annual Palio horse races take place, is a must-see. Siena has long been an important banking center and is located in Tuscany. A walking tour of Siena is included. Continue on to Florence for dinner and overnight stay.

April 8

A morning tour of Florence includes visits to two museums. Florence itself is like a living museum—each building steeped in architectural beauty and history. It was home to the ruling Medici family and many great artists such as Michelangelo, Dante, and Brunelleschi. Although composer Rossini was born in Pesaro, he is buried in Santa Croce Church, resting near Michelangelo. The afternoon is free for you to explore at your own pace. Dinner and overnight in Florence.

April 9

Before arriving in the Veneto region, you’ll stop in Verona—home of Romeo and Juliet, whose love story was immortalized by Shakespeare. Visit the Roman amphitheater or the house of the two young lovers. Verona is another wonderful example of a medieval city rich in history. Continue on to nearby Padua, a university town and home to the Basilica of St. Anthony, the patron saint of health. Dinner and overnight in Padua.

April 10

A short train ride takes you to Venice and its famous canals. Venice is a city like no other—transportation is by ferry boat, and its many islands are connected by bridges. The Doge’s Palace, once the residence of Venice’s rulers, is historically fascinating. You’ll visit this magnificent building as well as St. Mark’s Basilica and the iconic St. Mark’s Square. Enjoy a walking tour of Venice and an afternoon at leisure before returning to Padua by train. Dinner and overnight in Padua.

April 11

What an experience these past days have been—an unforgettable extension of your classroom! You’ve seen amazing sights and immersed yourself in art, architecture, history, and the legacy of the Roman Empire. How fortunate you are to have had the opportunity to see, learn, and experience so much. Your horizons have truly expanded.

Treasure the memories—they will stay with you forever!
